Which kind of eating personality have you got?
This is something I’ve been thinking about recently. After working with so many people to help them heal their eating relationship, I started to notice that there were similarities in how people related to food, as well as how their personalities and characters influenced that food relationship.
I thought it would be a good exercise for me, and for you, if I were to categorise the main types of eating personality I was encountering through my work with Eat Happy.
My idea was that it would give you the opportunity to reflect on your eating in a way that maybe you haven’t done before. I think this chance to have some time to really think about how your sense of self comes into play with your eating decisions is a really important step in order to help you understand and help improve how you feel about food, how you feel about yourself and how you live your life.
Why Does Knowing Your Eating Personality Help?
I created a super easy little quiz to help you discover which one of the 5 eating personality types you could be which will help you come to understand yourself a little better.
This understanding is like having some clarity in an otherwise murky and confusing thing – how, and why, you eat the way you do.
Without knowing yourself a little deeper, you risk living your life without much intention because there’s a missing piece of understanding.
Knowing how you work gives you more tools to help manage yourself better.
If you were going to get a dog, you’d certainly want to understand the breed you’d be getting so you’d know how to handle it.
The same is true for us. Knowing how and why we turn to food, or turn away from it, knowing if we eat alone or make a song and dance about not eating, or why we choose some foods over others can give us tools to manage ourselves better when it comes to eating.
This allows us to stop, pause, think, and decide with more intentionality that simply doing what we always do. Having that awareness that your eating personality type is coming into play gives you time to change your mind.
>>The eating personalities are not fixed.<<
They are flexible and offer a snapshot in time. It’s not that you are this way like a character type. This is how you currently eat, and you can use the personality you’ve been sorted into, to help you bring about balance in how you eat.
And that’s what it’s all about – Balance!
‘The Sixth Type’
The main aim of knowing your current eating type, is that you can use the info to help guide you to eat in a happier way. You could class this as another ‘type’ if you wish – the happy eater, the balanced eater, the intuitive eater. But the idea is that you understand first, and then become free! No boxes, just a happy relationship with food.
The main ways of eating and being we can all aim towards are:
So why do you eat the way you do?
Well, as I said, this isn’t a fixed character type – and the chances are, you haven’t always eaten this way. We are moved into a eating personality by lots of factors, and true – many of them do begin in childhood or the teenage years.
We may only be influenced, or may be forcefully manipulated to change our eating and/or our appearances.
An unhappy relationship with food doesn’t happen in a bubble – it is certainly something that is shaped by the people around us: society, family, culture, and all the expectations that come with that.
Can you change?
Yes, most definitely!
The personality types are meant to set you free because they’ll help create understanding for you. This is a powerful thing.
With this awareness you can move forwards to eat in a way that truly supports you and what you deeply need.
Most of us eat in a way that reflects a deep seated need that wasn’t met at some point in our lives.
You are far more capable and powerful than you think, and you’ll be able to create this positive relationship with yourself, build your self-esteem, and create a loving connection to yourself and this is the way you are going to move out of an unhappy relationship with food.
